Program Details

The B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics (3+1)* program offered by the UPES School of Advanced Engineering is an engaging, future-focused 4-year program under the Applied Science Cluster, designed with multiple entry and exit options. Aligned with the NEP 2020 framework, the curriculum enables students to tailor their academic journey according to their individual interests and career goals.

The program is spread across 8 semesters, with each semester comprising courses worth up to 20 credits. Based on the number of credits earned, students can exit the program at different stages with corresponding qualifications. Upon earning 40 credits in the first year, students are eligible for a certificate. Completing 80 credits over two years qualifies them for a diploma, and acquiring 120 credits over three years leads to an undergraduate degree. In the fourth year, students can choose between two distinct academic tracks. Those who opt for advanced domain-specific coursework will graduate with a B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics degree. Alternatively, students with a research orientation can undertake extensive research and defend their thesis before a panel of experts, also earning the B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics degree with a strong research component.

The program offers elective specializations in Astronomy & Astrophysics, Computational Physics, and Materials Science & Nanotechnology, giving students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in areas of personal interest. The fourth year emphasizes research-centric courses, equipping students with the critical skills needed for successful dissertation completion. A distinctive feature of the program is the provision for lateral entry, in line with NEP 2020 guidelines, allowing students to join at advanced stages based on prior academic qualifications and experience. Upon completing the B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics (3+1)* program, students are well-positioned to pursue Ph.D. programs with coursework, both in India and abroad, enhancing their academic and research trajectories.

Overall, the program offers a unique blend of academic flexibility, research opportunities, and specialized learning in the field of Physics—making it an excellent pathway for students aspiring to build advanced careers in science and research.
