Higher Doctoral Degree Programs

This Higher Doctoral Program is a non - funded self financing program offered by the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun, India.

This initiative provides favorable research opportunities for both Indian and international Higher Doctoral researchers to engage in frontier research at individual organizations, institutes and laboratories, covering research domains of Energy, Transportation, Lifestyle studies with subsets of Engineering, Science, Management and Legal studies.

Duration min. 2 years and a max. of 5 years Eligibility
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) degree in Engineering / Science / Management / Law or any other equivalent qualification approved by the Academic Council of this University.
  • Minimum 08 years of total relevant experience, out of which at least 05 years of post Ph D experience in Industry/Academics.


There will be a Viva-Voice, presented to not less than 5 evaluators of eminence.

Time period of Higher Doctoral Program

The proposed time period to conduct a post-doctorate research study shall be a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 5 years.


University of Petroleum & Energy Studies Higher Doctoral scholar Applicants must have obtained a PhD degree, not earlier than 5 years from the date of application to this University from any Indian or a foreign university. The applicant must have an outstanding record of publications, evidence of excellence in independent research and/or Industry achievements.


To evaluate the Higher Doctoral thesis, the number of evaluators shall not be less than 5.

Review Process

A Higher Doctoral Review Committee may be constituted with experts from within and outside the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun, India to review all applications. Review for the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies Higher Doctoral applicants will be primarily based on research performances, academic excellences, industry / professional work experience, recommendations of the Referees and the remarks of the Mentor(s) and the proposed research plans of the applicants.


Each Post Doctoral candidate shall be urged to identify a suitably qualified Mentor, to be duly approved by the University.


  • Registration into this program is available for application twice a year, effective 01 January and 01 July. All applications must be completed before this deadline.
Please note, the fee structure illustrated below is for the academic session already commenced in 2014.
Revised fee structure for Admissions 2015 academic session commencing next year will be updated shortly.

Rs 5,000 as an application fee, at the time of enrollment to be submitted along with the prescribed application form.
Rs 30,000 as onetime fee for thesis evaluation.
