International Conference on Physical Sciences and Technology
 

The 13th International Conference of International Academy of Physical Sciences on “Emerging Interfaces of Physical Sciences and Technology” was organized at UPES from June 14th -16th, 2011. Hosted by the Department of Mathematics together with Department of Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences & Earth Sciences, the prime objective of this conference was to educate faculty and students on the recent trends, tools and techniques in Physical Sciences and their usage in multidisciplinary research so that teaching and learning gain a higher impetus on a global platform.

The Inaugural Address was given by H.E. Shri. Shekhar Dutt Hon'ble Governor of Chattisgarh State and Prof. P. N. Pandey, General Secretary, IAPS, Dr. Rajendra Dhobal, Director General, UCOST, Prof. H. P. Dikshit, Director General, SGPA shared the dais. 650 delegates from different parts of the globe including Czech Republic, Canada, England and South East Asia were exposed to various disciplines of knowledge

A variety of seminars, workshops, conferences and training sessions are organised throughout the year for students and faculty alike to provide an opportunity to interact closely with the extended academic fraternity and doyens of industry. Such events also propel camaraderie amongst the students as they are instrumental in organising these events. It also helps build students confidence to present their ideas in front of an informed audience.


 

HR Round Table


The 10th Oil & Gas HR Round Table was organised by University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) under the aegis of Indian School of Petroleum & Energy (ISPe) on August 25th, 2011 in Mumbai. Two days interactive sessions were conducted, aiming at raising pertinent issues and generating meaningful discussions on the theme “HR’s Contribution to the Bottom line & Enterprise Value”.

Dr A.K. Balyan, CEO & MD - Petronet LNG, Rajeev Sonthalia, VP & MD - Schlumberger Asia Services Ltd., S Ramasundaram, I.A.S ( Retd) Nagarjuna Oil Corporation Ltd. and Shaleen Sharma, MD – Gujarat Gas Co. Ltd. were the distinguished members of the CEO’s Panel Discussion during the inaugural session. Around 150 participants comprising of HR Heads, HR professionals from various public and private sector oil & gas organizations across the country graced the occasion with their presence. Management of Development Program (MDP)

Ist four day residential MDP on Project Management: Benchmarks Redefined was organized at newly built and inaugurated Management Development Center, UPES on May 3-6, 2011. Mr. Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD  NTPC, Mr. S.P. Singh, Director HR “ NTPC, Mr. Sanjay Mathur, Head HR – Petroleum Refinery Business, Reliance Industries Ltd., and Mr. Brij Nandan Yadava, VP Project Management, DLF Home Developers Ltd. inaugurated the program. Under the directorship of Dr. M. Ramachandran, former Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development, GOI, the interactive sessions were conducted.

Among various dignitaries, who witnessed the sessions, were the delegates from both Private and Public Sector Companies, like: GAIL, OIL, IOCL, NTPC, Power Grid, L&T, Cairn Energy, Department of Minor Irrigation, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat Energy Training and research institute (GETRI). Over 20 distinguished speakers addressed 22 sessions, covering six all encompassing capsules on 'Managing Human Resources', 'Newer Strategies of Sourcing the Funds', 'Managing Funds', 'Project Contracts & Risk Management', 'Technology and IT Applications in Project Management', and 'Project Coordination & Monitoring'.

During the sessions, not only diverse perspectives were brought to the forum, but also issues and nuances were deliberated on the ways to design and execute projects while managing all the stakeholders well. The valedictory session of MDP received insightful note from Mr. Raj Kalady, MD - Project Management Institute, Mumbai.

 

Academic Research Report on 'Space Tourism in India'

An academic research report on Space Tourism in India conducted by students and faculty members of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun in association with the Institute of Air & Space Law, McGill University, Montreal, Canada was released by Dr Nasim Zaidi, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India on 30 March 2011. Applauding the efforts of UPES on the accomplishment of this Report, Dr Zaidi, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation expressed his belief that, In the years to come, this Report, the first ever in the country, will serve as a basic report for future research reports in the rapidly emerging field of space tourism and hence a truly momentous occasion for the University. He also stated that the Report was impressive in its contents and perspectives on the present and future challenges of this emerging industry. Speaking on the release of the Research Report, Dr Parag Diwan, Vice Chancellor, UPES said, This is the first such Study in India in which a team of Research Assistants and Teachers from the fields of Management, Law and Aerospace Engineering have collaborated and brought their respective interdisciplinary perspectives to bear on an emerging area of commercial endeavour. It is hoped that the Study Report will bring about critical thinking and also serve as a basis for carrying out further research in this field. To view the report click here

 

Moot Court

The first ever Dr. Paras Diwan Memorial 'Energy Law' National Moot Court Competition-2011, was organized from March 25-27, 2011 at UPES Campus. The competition saw participation of 20 different teams across the country. The Chief Guest Justice S.N Srivastava, Head, Uttarakhand State Police Complaint Tribunal inaugurated the contest which subsequently followed various sessions and rounds. The exciting Final Round of the competition was judged by the 5 member bench consisting of Mr. Venkataramni, Mrs. Sadna Ramachandran, Mrs. Peeyushi Jain, Mr. Shailender Jain and Mr. JM Bodha( GM Legal ONGC Delhi).

At the Valedictory session on 27 March 2011, the prizes were distributed to the winners by Justice Venkataramani. Later on, students were enlightened with the encouraging words of Justice Venkataramani and Mrs. Sadhna Ramachandran member of the Advisory Council of the COLS,UPES.
